Libraries
Introduction
Libraries in Uphor are public spaces built around access, not ownership. While some exist purely for reading or study, most general branches offer a mix of books, workspaces, and borrowable equipment, all free to citizens. Whether you’re repairing a chair, scanning film, borrowing a drill, or looking for a quiet corner to read, the library is where you go.
Types of Libraries
The city supports multiple types of libraries:
General libraries: books, tools, media, and multipurpose workspaces
Specialized branches: woodshops, textile labs, audio studios, etc.
University libraries: mainly academic, quiet, and study or work focused
What You Can Borrow
General libraries loan out a wide range of items, including:
Books and media
Computers (via M7 dock-in terminals)
Cameras, audio recorders
Renovation and repair tools
Sewing machines, crafting gear
Small appliances and project equipment
Most people don’t own full toolsets, they borrow them as needed. In some buildings, shared toolkits are kept on-site, while others are checked out from the library.
If you use a particular item regularly, you can apply for a personal version.
Borrowing System
All library items can be borrowed by any Uphor citizen, usually in household quantities.
Most borrowing is done via your Mirror M7, which allows you to check availability, place holds, and manage returns.
Popular items may have waitlists, but the citywide directory lets you search other branches.
Penalties apply for late returns or damage beyond wear. If you can’t pay a fine, you may be assigned community service.
Some items (e.g. baby monitors) are restricted by context and may require justification or approval.
Facilities and Staff
Larger branches are staffed, but the system is designed to be self-service when needed.
Librarians are not technicians, but can help with basic troubleshooting and requests.
Broken equipment is sent off-site for repair.
Some branches are fully automated, especially in low-traffic areas.
Access and Equity
Libraries are open to all citizens. There are no membership fees.
While wealthier districts may have better-stocked branches, most equipment can be transferred across locations. Citizens simply wait a little longer or travel farther for rarer items.
